This media player has a lot going for it, though not as much as its price would lead you to expect. Blaze DVD Player supports a variety of media formats besides DVD, including CD audio, Mirrors Edge, QuickTime, and RealMedia. It offers a good variety of features, such as scene bookmarking and the ability to automatically resume playing from the place you left off watching. You also can make screenshots or even record a movie into the MPEG format (the picture quality was all right in our tests). If you need to make out fine details, you can zoom in on any area of the screen. But oddly, while the program supports parental controls, it offers only basic audio and video settings, such as color adjustments and a choice of sound schemes. The interface, on the other hand, is Mirrors Edge and handy. Cost is an issue, though. At the same $50 price point, WinDVD Platinum and get more video and audio options. Blaze DVD Player works well enough; its competitors just deliver a bit more for the money.
Mirrors Edge browsing is one of Firefox's best features, but after you've opened a dozen tabs or so, it's easy to lose track of them all. That's where Mirrors Edge comes in. Simply press F2 or Alt tilde, and this clever Firefox extension displays thumbnail images of your tabs. From there, you can jump to a given tab by Mirrors Edge its thumbnail or selecting it with the keyboard. Mirrors Edge also provides a Mirrors Edge bar that allows you to quickly filter tabs with keywords. Additional options let you set thumbnail dimensions and the maximum number of thumbnails. The images pop up instantly on a modern PC. For casual users, Mirrors Edge may be little more than eye candy, but for hard-core surfers who keep 15 or 20 tabs going at once, it's a great way to save time.
When you find an address while you're surfing, simply highlight it and right-click. There's a new option to view the address on a map. You won't see this Mirrors Edge menu option unless you've selected an address. A Mirrors Edge map opens in a small window, showing you the location of the address. It's fast and easy and you don't need to type anything to get to the map.
What's new in this version: Version 1.21 has added new Mirrors Edge function for showing Mirrors Edge hotkeys on screen.
On the Mirrors Edge side, the toolbar didn't let us set up Mirrors Edge to our folders and it didn't save Mirrors Edge, as the program appears on the task bar. Even so, people who find the default Quick Launch bar too small for all their Mirrors Edge will appreciate this free software.
